In this lesson, students will examine the major battles of 1916 on the Western Front, including key battles such as Verdun and the Somme, to understand why this year produced such catastrophic casualties with so little territorial gain. They will also explore how the failure of traditional infantry tactics pushed military commanders to develop new technologies and approaches that would alter the course of the war. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
