Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the structure of feudal Japanese society, including the four main social classes and the ways in which labour, honour and loyalty determined a person’s position within the hierarchy. They will also explore the roles of the emperor, shogun and daimyo, as well as the groups who existed outside the formal class system, such as religious figures and those considered ‘unclean’ by the rest of society. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
