In this lesson, students will examine the organisation, training, and battlefield tactics of the Roman army during the period of the Roman Empire, focusing on how a system of professional, full-time soldiers gave Rome a significant military advantage over other ancient civilisations. Learners will explore the differences between legionaries and auxiliaries, the demanding daily routines that kept soldiers prepared for combat, and the specific tactics used on the battlefield, including coordinated formations and the use of weapons such as the pilum and gladius. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
