In this lesson, students will explore the Greco-Persian Wars, examining how the Greek city-states overcame their internal rivalries to unite against the invading Persian Empire in the 5th century BC. It covers the key military tactics, battles, and technologies that allowed the Greeks to defeat a much larger enemy, including the hoplite phalanx, the battles of Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis, and the role of triremes in naval warfare. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, research, and watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
