In this lesson, students will examine the origins of the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, including the religious, political and social purposes behind the events and the types of athletic competitions that took place. They will also explore the rewards given to Olympic winners, the restrictions placed on women, and the creation of the Heraean Games as a separate festival for female athletes. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, research, and watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
