The Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor Lesson

Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the causes and consequences of Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941, including the role of the trade embargo and Japan's resource shortages in triggering the conflict. They will also explore why the attack ultimately failed to achieve its strategic objectives, focusing on the survival of America's aircraft carriers and the speed of American industrial recovery. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
