In this lesson, students will learn that crusading campaigns took place across Europe, including the Baltic region, southern France, and the Balkans, and that these wars targeted pagan groups, Christian heretics, and rival powers rather than the Holy Land alone. They will examine specific cases such as the Wendish, Livonian, Prussian, Albigensian, and Varna crusades to understand motives, methods, violence, and outcomes across different regions and periods. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
