Overview of the Atlantic Slave Trade Lesson

Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the origins, operation, and consequences of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, exploring how millions of Africans were captured, transported, and sold across four centuries of European colonial activity. They will also investigate the lasting effects of the trade on the African continent and on African American communities, developing an understanding of how historical injustices can continue to influence laws and attitudes long after the events themselves have ended. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
