In this lesson, students will examine the causes and course of the French Revolution, from the financial crisis of the 1780s through to Napoleon's rise to power in 1799. They will explore how the collapse of the old political order produced a decade of competing governments, mass executions, and eventual military rule, gaining an understanding of why revolutionary change so often produces instability rather than the freedom it promised. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
