In this lesson, students will examine the life and theological convictions of Martin Luther, tracing the events that led him from a monk's cell in Erfurt to a direct confrontation with the power of the Catholic Church. They will explore how his translation of the New Testament, his doctrine of salvation by faith alone, and his refusal to recant at the Diet of Worms transformed the religious direction of sixteenth-century Europe. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, including reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
