In this lesson, students will examine how the Catholic Church rose to prominence during the early Middle Ages by providing stability, spreading Christianity, and accumulating religious, economic, and political power across Europe. They will explore the Church’s internal hierarchy, its core beliefs, the role of monasteries in preserving knowledge and supporting communities, and the ways in which Church leaders involved themselves in the political and financial affairs of medieval European society. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
