In this lesson, students will examine how the Cold War began and explore how the wartime conferences at Yalta and Potsdam failed to produce a lasting peace between the Allied powers. They will investigate how decisions about Poland and German occupation zones deepened the ideological divide between the capitalist West and the communist East, and consider how these tensions produced a conflict that would define international relations for more than four decades. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
