In this lesson, students will examine the Korean War (1950–1953), tracing its origins in the post-World War II division of the Korean Peninsula through to the fighting, foreign interventions, and eventual armistice that left the country divided along the 38th parallel. It explores how the rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States fuelled the conflict, the key battles and turning points of the war, and the devastating human and political consequences that continue to affect the Korean Peninsula today. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
