Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine how Alexander Dubc̍ek’s reform programme in Czechoslovakia during 1968 attempted to introduce political freedoms within the communist system, and why the Soviet Union and its allies responded with military force to crush these changes. They will analyse the causes of the Prague Spring, the content of the Action Programme, the nature of the Warsaw Pact invasion, and the long-term consequences of the Brezhnev Doctrine for Eastern Europe. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
