Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will learn how the Western Schism divided the Catholic Church through rival papal claims and competing political alliances. They will examine the causes of the conflict, the failed attempts to resolve it, and how it damaged the Church’s authority in late medieval Europe. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
