In this lesson, students will learn how the design of Viking longships allowed the Norse to travel vast distances, launch rapid attacks, and establish trade routes across Europe and beyond. They will examine how specific features such as clinker-built hulls, shallow drafts, and combined sail-and-oar propulsion gave Vikings an advantage in warfare, exploration, and commerce. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
