Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the key events of the first months of World War One, from the assassination of Franz Ferdinand to the outbreak of trench warfare. They will explore how a single political killing in Sarajevo triggered a chain of declarations of war, and how early military campaigns on the Western and Eastern Fronts gave way to the stalemate that would define the conflict for years to come. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
