Overview of the Life of Ned Kelly Lesson

Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the life of Ned Kelly, tracing his origins in colonial Victoria through his crimes, his capture, and his execution in 1880. They will explore the social conditions and police conduct that turned Kelly into a controversial figure in Australian history, and consider why he continues to be viewed as a folk hero by many Australians today. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, research, and watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
