In this lesson, students will examine the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and explore the chain of diplomatic events known as the July Crisis that led the major European powers to declare war on each other in the summer of 1914. They will investigate how a single act of political violence set off a sequence of ultimatums and mobilisations that ultimately brought about the opening of World War One. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
