In this lesson, students will examine the origins, motives, and consequences of British colonialism and imperialism, exploring how economic interests, political competition, and ideological justifications drove the expansion of the British Empire across the world. They will also investigate the wide-ranging effects of imperial rule on colonised peoples, from the transatlantic slave trade and economic exploitation through to the displacement of indigenous populations and the creation of nation-states whose boundaries still cause conflict today. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
