Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine how crime and punishment operated in medieval Europe, focusing on the way social status determined who was punished and how severely. They will also explore the role of public humiliation, physical punishment, trial by ordeal, trial by combat, and the Church in shaping a justice system that reflected the power structures of feudal society. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
