In this lesson, students will examine the major Germanic tribal migrations that weakened and ultimately destroyed Roman authority in Western Europe during the late Roman period and fifth century. They will explore the origins, movements, and settlements of tribes such as the Goths, Vandals, Franks, Saxons, Lombards, and Angles, investigating how these migrations disrupted Roman trade, replaced Roman political structures, and transformed the cultural foundations of early medieval Europe. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
