In this lesson, students will examine the experiences of Allied prisoners of war held by the Japanese military during World War II. They will explore the ideological and practical reasons behind the brutal treatment of prisoners, investigate the conditions in the most notorious POW camps, and analyse how the cultural code of Bushido contributed to the systematic dehumanisation of captured soldiers. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
