In this lesson, students will examine the landmark Mabo v Queensland case of 1992 and explore how Eddie Mabo's determination to fight for Indigenous land rights led to a profound shift in Australian law. They will investigate the legal concept of terra nullius and its role in denying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people their rights, and consider how the recognition of Native Title through the High Court's decision and the subsequent Native Title Act of 1993 changed the relationship between Indigenous Australians and the law. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
