In this lesson, students will examine the catastrophic fall of Singapore to the Japanese in February 1942, tracing the decisions and failures that led to Britain's worst colonial defeat of World War II. They will explore how flawed defensive planning, the loss of naval power, and Japan's effective use of combined arms all contributed to the surrender of Lieutenant General Percival and the capture of approximately 80,000 Allied troops. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
