In this lesson, students will examine the causes and consequences of the Berlin Blockade and Airlift of 1948-1949. They will explore how ideological competition between the capitalist West and communist Soviet Union turned the city of Berlin into a flashpoint of the early Cold War, and consider how the outcome of the airlift influenced the formation of NATO and the formal division of Germany. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
