In this lesson, students will explore the ANZUS Treaty and the SEATO agreement, two Cold War-era defence arrangements that the United States created with Australia and other allied nations to counter the spread of communism in the Asia-Pacific region. Through the study of these treaties, learners will evaluate how the political fears generated by the Korean War and the rise of communist China prompted Western nations to form regional alliances, and will assess why these agreements had mixed results over the following decades. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, source analysis, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
