Overview of American Civil Rights Lesson

Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will examine the key events and figures of the American Civil Rights movement, from the introduction of the Jim Crow Laws through to the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They will explore how African Americans used legal challenges and direct action protests to dismantle racial segregation and push the United States federal government toward legislative reform. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading, research, and video watching options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
