Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will learn about the pivotal moment in Japanese history when Commodore Perry's arrival in 1853 initiated the end of over two centuries of national isolation under the Tokugawa shogunate. The lesson will cover the subsequent internal upheaval, the Boshin War, and the transformative Meiji Restoration that propelled Japan into the modern era. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
