Learning objectives

In this lesson, students will explore why and how the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, what daily life looked like on each side of the divided city, and the sequence of political events that led to its unexpected collapse on 9 November 1989. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to explain how the withdrawal of Soviet support, mass public protest across East Germany, and a single political miscommunication combined to bring down the Wall and set Germany on the path to reunification in 1990. Students will have the opportunity to achieve this through choosing their own method of learning, from reading and research options, as well as the chance to engage in extension activities. This lesson includes a self-marking quiz for students to demonstrate their learning.
